Transitional Health

Our top priority for your new family member is that they are happy and healthy. Please let us know about any health concerns you have in the first week after adoption, prior to taking your dog to the vet. It is our goal to adopt out dogs that are deemed healthy, or if there are known medical issues that the adopting family is well informed.

If you do observe health concerns within the first week of bringing your new dog home, please contact us first so we can help you get the necessary care. It is common for dogs to experience symptoms such as diarrhea, lack of appetite, coughing/sneezing, runny nose/eyes, and we can easily provide you with medications during the first week. Please keep in mind that we cannot help cover costs incurred without prior approval and/or at unauthorized veterinarians.

Next Steps

  • Get a veterinarian!
    • These are the local vets that we recommend, and use for our own dogs:
      • T-Cap
      • Country Brrok Animal Hospital
      • Noahs Ark Animal Hospital
  • Get pet insurance!
    • Pet insurance can provide a safety net for your dog, and prepare your family for the life-long commitment of pet ownership. Having insurance also means financial stability for vet costs due to accidental injuries or unexpected health issues as your dog ages.
    • We recommend Healthy Paw Pet Insurance, one of the highest rated, affordable insurance providers and the insurance that we use to protect our own rescues.
  • Get training!
    • When it comes to training your dog and understanding canine behavior, we highly encourage dog parents to seek out trainers and tools that employ positive methods focusing on reward-based motivation.
    • We strongly advise against training methods that use fear and intimidation to get results (such as Cesar Millan). These methods commonly misuse terms like "dominance" and being the "alpha-dog/pack leader," and research has shown that these aversive or confrontational training methods can lead to more fearful or aggressive responses from your dog.
    • We love positive training methods instead because they're more effective in producing desired behaviors, and we believe training your dog should be a fun bonding experience. Positive training helps build confidence in your dog, while encouraging them to listen and trust you.
    • You can sign up for positive group training classes through your local Petsmart
